Arguably the greatest player ever to play for Doncaster Rovers and dubbed “The English Pele” by Sir Matt Busby’s Assistant Manager Jimmy Murphy - Alick Jeffery was just 15 years old when making his professional debut in 1954 before going on to represent England Under 23’s in 1956 before briefly retiring in 1959 at the age of just 20 after breaking his leg in 1957 - a few months before he was due to leave Rovers for Manchester United. Jeffery would come out of retirement in August that year to play for Skegness Town whilst overcoming this injury before going on to have spells at Sydney Prague, Auburn and a second spell at Skegness before returning to Rovers in 1963 at the age of 24 enjoying 6 more years.
